Lifetime problem with circular knives

This is what happened to one of our sales representatives, when one of his customers told him about the lifespan problem he was experiencing with his circular knives.

This company, which specialises in building and industrial materials, cuts fibreglass using large HSS (High Speed Steel) circular knives. But every day the team had to replace these knives because the material is very abrasive, and the knife is sharpened on the machine, after every single cut.

We first offered them to test our HSS circular blades to compare them with those of the OEM. But these knives have very tight tolerances on diameter, flatness and straightness, and are expensive to produce. In addition, HSS knives have the special feature that they bend and break easily if the material to be cut is too hard. The consequence for our customer was that the knife twists after a few cuts/sharpenings.

Solution made in BKS

Our sales representative therefore proposed PM steel circular knives. This steel is stronger, less brittle, does not twist or bend and makes it easier to achieve the required tolerances. Following the test, we obtained good results: our customer saw the service life multiplied by two.

But our sales representative still thought he could achieve better results! He visited the company to analyse the machine and the production line and made a few modifications to the grinding wheels, which he knows all about. As a result, the service life has been tripled and sometimes even reaches 400% compared to that of HSS circular blades! And our customer was very satisfied!
